Position Description 

Shady Side Academy seeks an experienced Director of Nursing to organize and support all duties of care for our nursing and health services operations across the Academy. 

The Director oversees the nursing staff and overall nursing operations, including shift scheduling and staffing for a support team composed of four, campus-specific nurses. The Director is responsible for maintaining and monitoring high standards of clinical care, implementing procedural and policy support for nursing personnel, as well as supportive evaluation and training. The Director is a member of the Academy’s Incident Command and Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) teams.  

Additionally, the Director serves as the primary nurse for SSA’s Senior School, including oversight of the Senior School’s new Health Center, a spacious 2,000-square-foot facility that provides health services to approximately 475 day and boarding students in grades 9-12. The Health Center also serves as the home of the Senior School nursing team, which includes the night/after-hours nurse and a cohort of  full and part-time weekend nurses who support the residential life community. The Health Center features a nurses' office, exam room, waiting area, six private beds, a kitchen, two ADA-accessible bathrooms and wireless internet. The Director also works as the nurse in support of the Academy’s many summer camp programs.

The Director should be a hard-working and compassionate Registered Nurse with developed managerial and administrative skills.  A desirable candidate should possess a flexible mindset in their supervisory nursing role and schedule, expecting regular rotational work on weekends and occasional work during school breaks. 

Leadership Responsibilities: 

  • Effective management of SSA’s nursing team; sustain a strong commitment to wellness and quality health care for Shady Side’s student community. 

  • Establish and maintain effective communications, both internal and external as it relates to SSA’s delivery of care for students. 

  • In collaboration with the nursing team and administration, write and revise policies and procedures relevant to SSA’s delivery of care, assuring compliance with licensure and standards of care.

  • Promote collegial relationships and provide guidance to colleagues, including those who lead residential life, counseling, athletics, and others, in order to assure appropriate continuity of student health care.

Management Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the Academy’s health services budget, which includes budgeting all four SSA campuses

  • Supervise Shady Side’s nursing staff and promote their professional development

  • Recruit, interview, and recommend for hire new members of the nursing team 

  • Orient all newly hired nursing staff through an effective induction process 

  • Complete regular performance reviews of SSA’s nursing staff

  • Ensure the maintenance of all required certification and training including CPR, and blood borne pathogen training for nursing staff.

  • Provide ongoing support for nurses and other care providers related to the use of electronic medical records

  • Implement procedures that help assure compliance with regulations for the dispensing of medications to students

  • Facilitate nursing aspects of health center clinics, including influenza annual immunization clinics etc.  

  • Coordinate and manage transportation of boarding students to medical appointments, in cooperation with the residential life team and school driver(s). 

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of nursing care provided by the Academy’s nursing staff, and provide direct patient care to Senior School students seeking services for illness, injury or counseling.

  • Review clinical documentation in medical records, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and providing training as needed to nursing staff.

  • Oversee the review of all new student health records, assuring compliance with State immunization requirements.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Develop a nursing schedule and staffing assignments, including weekend coverage in support of Shady Side’s residential life community 

  • Monitor and approve time off requests from the nursing staff

  • Monitor the condition of nursing equipment, collaborating with the Chief Finance and Operations officer on repair and/or replacement needs

  • Manage international insurance enrollment through Shady Side Academy's partnership with Clifford Allen Associates


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required, Masters preferred

  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania required

  • Certification in CPR/AED

  • Nursing experience in adolescent health, school, or urgent care nursing preferred

  • Three or more years in nursing management experience preferred,

  • Possess communication skills and adaptive ability and technical skills to streamline health services processes with technology.
